EU AI Act reference

Glossary

Definitions of key terms from the EU AI Act — written for technical teams building high-risk AI in the EU, not for lawyers.

AI Provider (EU AI Act)

An AI provider is the natural or legal person that develops an AI system or has it developed, and places it on the market or puts it into service under their own name or trademark.

Annex IV

Annex IV of the EU AI Act specifies the mandatory technical documentation that providers of high-risk AI systems must create and maintain under Article 11.

Conformity Assessment

Conformity assessment is the procedure by which a high-risk AI provider demonstrates that their system meets EU AI Act requirements before placing it on the market, resulting in CE marking.

High-Risk AI System

A high-risk AI system is an AI system that falls under Annex III of the EU AI Act, subject to the full set of provider obligations including Annex IV technical documentation, conformity assessment, and registration in the EU database.

Intended Purpose

Intended purpose is the use for which an AI system is designed by the provider, as specified in the instructions for use, promotional materials, and technical documentation. It determines how the system is classified under the EU AI Act.

Model Card

A model card is a short structured document that describes a machine learning model's intended use, performance characteristics, limitations, and evaluation results. It is a precursor to — but not a substitute for — EU AI Act Annex IV technical documentation.

Notified Body

A notified body is an independent conformity assessment organisation designated by an EU member state to evaluate whether high-risk AI systems meet the requirements of the EU AI Act.

Post-Market Monitoring

Post-market monitoring is the continuous process by which AI providers actively collect and analyse data on their deployed systems to identify risks and ensure ongoing compliance with the EU AI Act.

Technical Documentation (EU AI Act)

Technical documentation is the mandatory regulatory dossier that high-risk AI providers must compile under EU AI Act Article 11 and Annex IV. It proves conformity to a notified body or supervisory authority.
